What’s better than camping out? Camping out without a tent! And that is exactly what 1st Ferryhill Scouts got up to recently, reports Donald Park.
Their annual Survival Camp is always a highlight in the Scouts’ calendar and this year was no exception. With scorching hot weather and clear blue skies, everything was perfect for a night under the stars. At Survival Camp the Scouts build their own shelters, light their own fires, and cook their own food using the skills they learn during their weekly meetings every Tuesday night at the Scout Hall in Dean Bank.
One Scout said, “Last year the weather was absolutely horrible, it rained all the time, so we had to stay in our camps the whole time. This time it’s been red hot, so we didn’t even sleep in our shelters. We took our sleeping bags to a big open area and just slept under the stars, it was brilliant!”.
Another Scout, who was there for the first time, said: “I can’t believe we didn’t have any tents to sleep in, I was so nervous. Everyone was just getting on, so I just joined in and got on with it. It was amazing! I’ll definitely be coming next year again!”
Skip, the Scout Leader, said: “I am very proud of the youngsters, they have got on and done everything they needed to do to have a fantastic weekend. They have built excellent shelters, though it turns out they didn’t even sleep in them and cooked some ‘gourmet’ meals between them. Yes, it has been an absolutely fantastic weekend!”
