In rain-sodden conditions, Ferryhill progressed to the next round of the Minor Cup with a resounding 8-1 win over Whitburn & Cleadon at Dean Bank on Saturday, writes Chris Orton. A loyal crowd of supporters braved the awful weather to cheer the lads on.
Athletic played some very good football throughout and thoroughly outplayed the opposition. The game started well when Kieron Richardson struck home yet again to add to his impressive tally for the season. A momentary lapse shortly after allowed Whitburn & Cleadon to equalise, but Matthew Agar soon put that right with a goal scored after he easily cut through the opposition defence. Whitburn & Cleadon offered little, with Reece Wilkinson and Jay Roddam both having good attempts. Agar got his second just before half time as the rain moved in to drench everybody.
The second half was even better for Ferryhill, with Kyle Quinn notching one up following a corner and Richardson adding yet another. Alex Quinn worked very well for the team, and it wasn’t long before another goal came when Will Houlahan made it six, beating the defence easily. Keeper Luke Teare made a good save from one of the opposition’s few attempts on goal, before Danny Smith at the other end had an effort that stayed hit. Goals seven and eight followed in quick succession, with Aidan Barrass and Richardson notching them just as the sun decided to shine.
This was ultimately an easy victory for Athletic and they move into the next round with confidence. Next week it’s back to league action with a trip to Esh Winning Cricket Club to take on Deerness Valley, who have played just six league games so far. Kick off scheduled for 2pm.
