Awards galore for Youth Theatre Group

Members of the award-winning Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group.

Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group are no strangers to being centre stage at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, North Region’s Awards Ceremony, which is held annually at the prestigious Gosforth Park Hotel in Newcastle.

At this ceremony over the last few years, they have picked up the Award for the Best Musical Youth Production for their amazing production of Oliver and later for Seussical The Musical, which attracted not only that high accolade but resulted in Megs Defty receiving the award for Best Youth Individual Performance in a Musical and the Gordon Richardson Award for Service and Achievement in Youth Amateur Theatre.

At the awards held this year in early October, Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group again picked up the Award for the Best Musical Youth Production for their January show Return to the Forbidden Planet. They also collected the Best Youth Concert Performance Award.

Similar to other groups, the theatre group performs one musical show each year in February and showcases the amazing talents of it’s members in a themed concert each July – displaying a variety of musical experiences.

This is an outstanding achievement over the last few years – but that’s not all…

Youth member Alfie Stephenson was awarded Best Youth Individual Performance in a Musical and Jayden Nixon was awarded Best Youth Supporting Role in a Musical for their performances in Return to the Forbidden Planet.

The group’s Chair Louise Defty directed the shows and said: “At each of our shows, we display our certificates on a small table for all to see, but now we are looking for a bigger table!”

The awards certificates will be on show again at the group’s next performance which will be Shrek The Musical, at Spennymoor Town Hall on 6th-8th February 2025.
