While most of us were looking forward to the festivities, New Year’s Eve 2022 proved life-changing for Jaz, who suffered a significant head injury that left her brain damaged and in hospital for five months.
Jaz had to relearn everything, from eating to walking and all the things we all take for granted.
Seeing an advert for volunteers at Shildon Alive, Jaz applied explaining how she had previously volunteered at a cafe in Crook over a busy Christmas period and before her accident was a fully trained chef.
Tracey Chappell of Shildon Alive, told the Crier: “Jaz came to the interview with such a lovely and open heart and a smile that shone through. Her passion really showed, especially when she said that cooking was all she had known and couldn’t picture doing anything else.”
That was three months ago and Jaz has had to learn how to take the bus and remember the correct time and the route, which is no mean feat after her accident and memory loss.
It’s her skills in the kitchen that has made her a star at Shildon Alive, fitting in so quickly that she was making children’s meals and getting her pasta dish on the full menu within weeks of starting.
Talking about her time at Shildon Alive and how’s she’s now looking for employment, Jaz said: ”Volunteering at Shildon Alive has really boosted my confidence much more than I realised. It pushed me to get out of the house and relearn how to travel on a bus, mix with new people and cooking again, which is something I love.
“If anyone is wondering what to do with their spare time, I really recommend volunteering at a centre like this one. It can change your life.”
Tracey added: “To know what Jaz has been through and how far she has come in her physical rehabilitation is really inspiring for all of us here.
“She’s become an asset in the kitchen and it’s great to see her blossom in the role.”
