Shildon AFC retained top spot in Northern League Division one after their second six-goal thrashing in three games, this time putting Penrith to the sword at Dean Street.
The win came after another three home points were picked up at the weekend when Boro Rangers were on the end of a 3-1 defeat. The Railwaymen kept up their season’s pattern of taking an early lead in games, opening the scoring in the 6th minute on Saturday through the division’s top scorer, Joe Posthill, who has so far notched 14 goals in just 10 league matches.
The league’s second top scorer, Andrei Ardelean, some distance back on 9 for the season, was next on the scoresheet. Boro pulled one back in the 65th through Stuart Rose, but any hope was snuffed out ten minutes later when Luke Spalding secured the points.
On to midweek and the journey back across the Pennines will have felt twice as long for Penrith after a six-goal drubbing. Jon Weirs opening the scoring in the 14th minute, which was then followed by another three in nine minutes from Ardelean (19, 28) and, who else but Postill (25), who has now won and convered each of Shildon’s last four penalties, which surely has the statisticians scrambling. With another result assured in a first half blitz, Spalding in the 55th and Ciaran Banks with three minutes to go provided the second half gloss.
Whitley Bay, who visit Dean Street at 3pm this Saturday, currently lead the chasing pack, four points further back, while Bishop Auckland, six points adrift are, at this early stage, the only side capable of catching up, given their two games in hand.
