Last month, a remembrance afternoon was held for Ian Phillips, a popular local fundraiser who passed away at the turn of the year.
A resident of Kirk Merrington, living in the Spennymoor area all his life, Ian had established connections by working in Ferryhill.
Ian worked at Home Group as a Mental Health Support Worker for 18 years, a role with which he greatly empathised and enjoyed.
On his retirement in 2021, Ian still volunteered, supporting local drop-in sessions and social outings.
Attended by Home Group customers and colleagues along with Ian’s close friends, the event was arranged so people could give thanks to an amazing man who had made such an impact to so many people lives right across County Durham.
The event was held at Home Group’s Ferryhill allotment project, Green Horizons, which Ian himself had played a large role in creating, from what was initially an overgrown derelict allotment to a now well-established four plot project and a place that he cherished.
A barbecue was organised, along with music from Ian’s favourite artists, to give people the chance to mix and celebrate Ian’s life.
Ian had supported people with their mental health and wellbeing for over twenty years, particularly within the Spennymoor and Ferryhill area.
He was a very popular individual and was always greeted by so many people whilst making his way through the two towns.
Due to his popularity and the amazing work he had done over the years, his friends arranged for a plaque to be unveiled in his honour.
Colleagues and friends then shared tributes and told stories about the memories they have of Ian, and the impact he had made on theirs and so many people’s lives.
