If audience reaction is any judge, Bishop Auckland is set to enjoy regular monthly hilarity at the Park Head Hotel.
The hotel’s inaugural comedy night on Wednesday evening (30 July) attracted a sell-out audience to its intimate setting, with many choosing the extra option of a three-course meal to fill their bellies with food as well as laughs.
Irrepressible and expert compere, Matt Reed – a Mackem now living in Newcastle – introduced two guests: half Geordie, half Turk, Louise Young, and TV regular, Chris Washington.
A rising star already seen on Comedy Central Live and Channel 4’s Original Comedy shorts, Young’s show consisted of class, culture and coming out, while the conflict of her mixed roots, she admitted, left one half wishing to fix everyone’s teeth while the other wanted to smash them out.
Washington’s timid demeanour and low-key, fast-talking delivery was in sharp contrast to the big laughs his excuse-laden comedy produced.
Asked if a monthly gig should go on, a resounding ‘yes!’ from the audience suggests this rough around the edges show will soon polish up to shine as brightly as the stars on its stage.
