Shildon’s established jazz band the Northern Citrines have recently competed in the biggest competition of the year – the 49th annual United Kingdom Federation of Jazz Bands Championships, held in Doncaster last month.
The band performed exceptionally well at this event and have been crowned this year’s Division Two World Champions, a title they have strived to win since starting up in 2002. The band was formed by Janice, Scott and Nicola Wheatley along with a host of committee and volunteers.
Very sadly, Janice passed away last year, so did not get to celebrate this long anticipated win, however, the band were able to donate a trophy in her memory which was won by the Welsh band, Blue Phoenix for their outstanding drumming.
A spokesperson said: “A very well done for all placings including drum major, lead kazoo, best music, best display band, overall band of the day, best entertainment, first place world champions division two, multi-tenors, lead drummer, tenor drummer, mini mascot and baton. We would also like to congratulate Shildon Jubilees Jazz Band on their win at the MBA UK main event.”
