Things have been a bit stop-start here at Auckland/Chilton Croquet due to the less than dry conditions, writes Richard Peck, but I can report that the club played at Alnmouth recently.
Sadly, William, Jane P, Marcia and Carol couldn’t quite get the victory required as they went down 10-8 with one more league match to go. However, last weekend saw some of the ACC players show their skills as William won the Croquet North Singles Competition up at Belsay Hall.
He beat Phil Errington, a very good croquet player, 10-6 and 10-9. Then the two Janes won the Doubles Plate in a competition at Ashby. And Jean came a very creditable second place at a tournament also at Belsay.
Well as I write this, outside it is pouring down with rain, so no croquet practice today, but also no need to water the plants!
When the weather allows, everyone is welcome to try your hand at croquet at the Miners Welfare Recreation Ground on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons from 2pm until 4pm-ish. We’re always looking for new or returning players of all ages. Your first three sessions are free and all equipment is free to use and it’s a good way to get fresh air, gentle exercise and learn something new.
