Work began recently on phase 2 of the redevelopments in Bishop Auckland Market Place to make way for the new ‘Visitor Welcome’ building.
The entrance to the Market Place from Kingsway/Durham Road and from North Bondgate to Castle Chare will be closed to all traffic until the end of September.
The first phase of the works to the carriageway will take place, allowing the granite sets to be installed.
This will also allow for the setting of the materials in appropriate weather conditions.
Access for local residents will be maintained to 19-24 Market Place, from North Bondgate/Silver Street.
Access will be maintained to the Market Place via a ‘cut through’ outside of St. Anne’s Church, maintaining loading access at all times. Some disabled bays will need to be suspended as will the limited waiting bays.
Access will be provided using 3-way traffic lights, which will coordinate traffic routes from North Bondgate, Wear Chare and Silver Street.
These arrangements, as well as the suspension of the parking and limited waiting bays, will remain during Phase 3.
Vehicular and pedestrian access to Auckland Castle will be provided. This will maintain access for the shuttle bus, whilst Auckland Castle and Library Tea Room is open during the summer months, before refurbishments start at the end of September.
