On Saturday, February 15 despite threats of snow and after lots of preparation, many residents came together to hold a hugely successful quiz night with proceeds going to the Learning Library, reports Ian Machin.
Hosted by Michael and his Daleside Arms team in Croxdale and organised by Judith Machin, with help from friends and businesses in the town and support from the Daleside, we had a successful, fully sold out night.
There were odd questions, even stranger answers, lots of laughs, sighs and cheering, with highs and lows on the various quiz questions, raffle and bingo.
Cell phones were banned and there was no “phoning a friend” or using points (or cash) to buy through to the next round!
The quiz was punctuated by a raffle and a quick game of bingo at half time.
We had three hours of quiz head scratching, puzzled looks, singing (some teams knew music and movie answers and could not hold back) and repeating some questions several times.
Finally we had a winning team after a tense tie-breaker which needed two questions to separate the teams:
Question 1, which did not break the deadlock, was: Name three different words starting with ‘DW’.
Question 2 which identified the winners wa: Which North American landmark is constantly moving backwards?
With attendees from as far away as York and Middlesbrough, plus local resident “quizers” in the audience of 70, including Learning Library Trustees, the quiz night raised a much needed £890 for the Learning Library.
Well done and a huge thanks to everyone involved on February 15 and earlier for their support and generosity.

The winning team, Quiz Champions, are keen to defend their success.
Based in Spennymoor, delivering to and helping to support families across County Durham, the Learning Library loans out various resources (free to families) for all ages (mostly children) who have additional needs.
Their resources include larger games and toys, sensory boxes, swings, and spinning chairs.
Often the resource is too expensive for individual families to buy.
The Learning Library also supports schools.
