Local MP, Alan Strickland, recently welcomed a group from the Ferryhill Ladder Centre to the Houses of Parliament as part of the Centre’s ongoing democracy project.
The visit was designed to give members of the group some insight into the heart of national government.
Alan and his team led the group on a guided tour of the historic Palace of Westminster, including taking a look at Westminster Hall, Central Lobby and even going into the House of Commons chamber.
The Ferryhill Ladder Centre has been delivering a local democracy project aimed at encouraging civic awareness and participation, particularly among those who may feel disconnected from traditional political processes.
The visit gave the group a chance to connect what they’ve been learning about democracy with the real world of parliamentary politics.
Alan Strickland MP said: “It was a real privilege to welcome the group from Ferryhill Ladder Centre to Westminster.
“Creating opportunities for residents from our area to understand how democracy works is a really important part of my job.
“The Ladder Centre does fantastic work in our community and I hope the visit inspired the group to feel more confident about making their voices heard going forward.”
