Adult learners from across County Durham have been honoured for their dedication and determination.
Each year, Durham County Council’s Adult Learning and Skills Service recognises the achievements of its most inspiring students at an awards ceremony.
More than 200 nominees attended this year’s event, with radio presenter Alan Robson MBE handing out awards in five categories – Individual Achievement, Apprentice of the Year, Tutor of the Year, Group of the Year and the Making an Impact project award.
The Individual Achievement Award honours students who have demonstrated an overwhelming commitment to learning.
There were three winners in this category, including David Walton, 31, from Bishop Auckland.
David has pushed himself to the limit, discovering talents he didn’t know he had during a song writing and music course. His hard work and determination has inspired those around him. Willing to take on any challenge, David has been an enthusiastic participant in a range of projects.
There were also three award-winners in the Group of the Year category, including one venture from Bishop Auckland – The Nurturing Programme at Woodhouse Close Children’s Centre.
Learners taking part in the programme have developed skills which enable them to look to the future with confidence. For many, just having the courage and confidence to attend the group is an achievement in itself.
Susan Duggan, Adult Learning and Skills Service quality and curriculum officer, said, “We’re incredibly proud of our learners and their fantastic achievements. It’s great to be able to recognise their efforts.
“Learning can provide us with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make real changes in our lives and our winners are wonderful examples of just what can be achieved.”
