Mad hatters at Dale & Valley Homes have been knitting away to support a national fundraising appeal.

Staff at the Wear Valley housing company, based on South Church Industrial Estate, persuaded relatives and friends to join in The Big Knit 2010.
They have been clicking away with their knitting needles to produce dozens of tiny hats in a huge number of styles and colours.
The woolly headwear will be keeping bottles of Innocent smoothie warm on the shelves of Boots and Sainsbury’s stores in November and for each hat-wearing smoothie sold Age UK will receive 25p towards a national target of £200,00.
Dawn Patterson, who organised the Dale & Valley knitters, said, “Everyone has been really taken by the little hats. They are cute and coming up with different designs and colour combinations was fun.
“Some people who knitted them had never done any knitting before so you can see how it enthused people.
“The hats make great accessories for toys so we hope people will enjoy our handiwork and that the money raised will do some good for older people in County Durham.”
