Meeting – Ferryhill History Society
The next meeting of the Ferryhill History Society, will take place on Wednesday 27 September from 7:30pm, at Ferryhill Station Club.
The speaker will be Dr Jürgen Schmoll, from the Durham Astronomical Society, with a talk on The History of the Telescope and Astronomy in the North East of England. The presentation covers 400 years of telescope development, providing an introspection into the improvement of this important astronomy tool over four centuries. The local history of astronomy includes Reverend Espin in Tow Law, the company of Grubb-Parsons in Newcastle and the biggest refractor on Earth being located in Gateshead for a short time.
The meeting is open to all who are interested.
There will be a cover charge of £2 for each adult and no charge for students.
Dr Jürgen Schmoll is a professional astronomer and engineer who designs and assembles optical systems for research purposes. These are mostly optics for astronomy and space applications. He is also a keen amateur astronomer who likes building and refurbishing telescopes. He has built two garden observatories that he uses to view and photograph astronomical objects.
