Defeat dents promotion hopes for Ferryhill Athletic

It was a bare-bones Ferryhill Athletic squad that met Wolviston at Dean Bank on Saturday, with many players missing through injury or work commitments reports Chris Orton.

After the terrific performance against Willington the previous week, hopes were high that all three points could be earned.

Sadly though, it was not to be as a lack of a cutting edge cost the home side and they fell to a 2-1 defeat, severely denting their promotion hopes.

Matters weren’t helped five minutes in when Kyle Quinn suffered a nasty injury and had to be substituted.

Athletic had most of the early play, with Kieron Richardson shooting wide on the quarter hour.

Indeed, it was the home side who opened the scoring after twenty minutes when Joe Langton turned the ball in from a Richardson cross.

This was to be the high point however, as from this point on the game turned into a scrappy battle that neither side dominated.

Wolviston made things hard for Ferryhill and the hosts found it difficult to convert their play into goals.

Langton went close again, Brad Wilson fired one at the keeper and Alex Quinn shot over, but the ball stubbornly refused to cross the line.

Wolviston proved dangerous on the break, with one main man up front.

And it was the number nine who broke Ferryhill hearts when he slotted the ball past Dan Pratt in the Athletic goal.

Somehow, the away side managed to get a second not long after, with Ferryhill being the authors of their own misfortune in allowing it to happen.

Very little of note came from either team from this point on, with only Kieron Richardson’s wide shot late on being of any note.

With the season drawing to a close it will take a miracle for Athletic to gain promotion this season, but the adventure continues next week when Ferryhill travel to New Ferens Park to face Belmont, kick off 2.30pm.
