An Adam Lennox goal six minutes from time proved the difference between the sides as Shildon marched into the semi-finals of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup by 2-1 at the expense of local rivals, West Auckland Town.
In a scrappy affair, Shildon, who were technically the away side, although the game was played at Dean Street due to ongoing works at the West Auckland ground, took a 1-0 lead into the second half, courtesy of Nathan Greenwood’s opener in the 35th minute.
However, they were pegged back by James Harrison just 18 minutes from time.
But just as the 172 crowd began to fear the dreaded penalties, up stepped Lennox with the decisive strike.
It will be deja vu for all at the weekend when the fixture is repeated, albeit this time in the league and at West Auckland.
Then on Tuesday evening, the Railwaymen cross the Pennines to take on Carlisle City.
