Shoppers in Bishop Auckland were able to try their hand at everything from bricklaying to table tennis this week, when the town’s college brought a ‘have a go’ roadshow to the town centre.
People thinking about their next career move or training course met tutors and students from a wide range of curriculum areas at Bishop Auckland College and had a go themselves.
The roadshow was held at the town’s Newgate Centre from every day this week, with hands-on demos from the music, sport and leisure, construction, engineering, hair & beauty, health & social care and IT departments.
Members of the public took on sports students at table tennis, found out if they were better at air guitar than the real thing, tried a bit of plumbing and laid some bricks. Demos were also given in hairdressing and beauty therapy.
The event was part of the college’s ongoing recruitment drive for the September 2012 intake. Debbie Lockyer, of Coundon, enjoyed a bit of pampering as the college’s hair and beauty technician Emma Clarkson painted her nails.
Debbie, 49, who is currently unemployed, said, “I think it’s a great idea for the college to get out into the town centre and demonstrate the different courses they have to offer. Some may be shy or unable to get into the college and this gives them that initial idea that could spark interest in going along to enrol on a new course. I’m certainly going to go up and have a look.”
Principal Anne Isherwood added, “I’d urge anyone who left school in the summer and has not yet decided on their next move, or anyone thinking about retraining, to find out about the wide variety of training courses we can offer.
“We are still recruiting until the end of this month so it is an ideal time to meet tutors and students and make your next move.”
