Once again, the team at Chilton’s Durham Road store step up to support tackling food poverty and this year they are taking on an epic 1,000-mile indoor cycling challenge equivalent to a road trip from Chilton to Barcelona! In this heat it may be even hotter than Spain!

They are pedalling for Comic Relief’s Move for Meals campaign in partnership with Sainsbury’s. The goal is to raise money and fight local food poverty to as nobody should go without the basic essentials. This belief drives the team’s massive fundraising effort. Every single mile helps raise vital awareness and funds for families and children who need it most.

The team set up an in-store exercise bike to tackle this massive target.

The store’s cycling challenge is part of a massive national campaign by Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief. Across July and August, thousands of Sainsbury’s and Argos colleagues across the UK are taking on physical challenges to help close the “holiday hunger gap”. This national “Move for Meals” drive has set an ambitious goal to raise £6 million this year alone, which is enough to provide 12 million meals to families facing food insecurity. It marks the next phase of a long-term pledge to raise £30 million for Comic Relief by 2030, effectively doubling the partnership’s impact to deliver 120 million meals since 2022. To maximize the impact of every mile pedalled at Durham Road, Sainsbury’s has committed to matching all customer donations made in-store and online until 31 July.

Steven Booth, Customer Trading Manager said. “As a team, we’re incredibly proud to be supporting Comic Relief’s Move for Meals campaign in partnership with Sainsbury’s. By taking on the challenge of cycling 1,000 miles, we’re not only raising vital funds but also helping to shine a light on the very real issue of food poverty within our communities. We believe everyone deserves access to basic essentials, and we’re committed to do our part to support those who need it most. The support from both colleagues and customers has been truly outstanding, and we’re grateful for every contribution made towards this important cause.”

Customers can join the fight against food insecurity by visiting the store and to cheer on the cycling team and make a donation or alternatively you can donate online to the national campaign or convert and donate your Nectar points.
