In Chilton’s first year as an established new bowls club they have faced many challenges. They have gained all of their equipment by donation, had much help from many clubs and the local authority to get up and running, as well as amazing donations from their own members.
The season is now nearing an end and the team couldn’t be happier with how it’s gone, with top half finishes in two leagues and a mid-table in the other.
But now the team has gone one better and won the Cleveland & Teesside Leagues Coronation Cup in their first league season.
Victory came against Jack Hatfield Bowls Club from Middlesbrough who were just announced as league champions last week for the numerous time.
The game itself was close over the two rinks of four per side. One rink of Michael Wigham, Phill Rowlands, Bill Morland and son Scott Morland got off to a tough start with Paul Laville and his team off to a flyer on their local green. In the end though, the Chilton lads pulled the game back to within four to lose 21-17.
The big story though was the other rink, where Terry Dougherty, Dave Bell, James Campion and Carmel Guy took early control and kept the pressure up for the full game with a 23-8 win over a rink skipped by Kenny Hewitson of Jack Hatfield.
The victory on shots overall secured the team the silver bowl and the celebrations commenced for Chilton Excavators first major trophy as a new club.
Club secretary Scott Morland couldn’t be prouder of his team, and not just the eight players selected for this match, but the whole club that has pulled together all season to achieve great outcomes on and off the field.
