A Spennymoor County Councillor was invited to a local primary school on VE Day, Thursday, 8th May, to talk to the pupils in an assembly about his time in the British Army.
Councillor Pete Molloy attended the assembly, which was held at Middlestone Moor Primary Academy, as part of the school’s VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations and included the pupils wearing red, white and blue.
Cllr Molloy also brought with him three other veterans, Ron Eldrett (army), Stephen Blakey (Royal Navy) and George Robson (Royal Navy), to talk about their respective experiences whilst serving in the armed forces.
The assembly also consisted of a short video explaining what VE Day is and how it came about, the children singing a song and a question and answer session for the veterans.
Speaking about attending the assembly, Cllr Molloy said: “It was a pleasure to attend the school’s VE Day assembly to talk to the children and answer their questions.
“It was also good to be able to bring Mr Robson, who is a World War Two veteran, to talk to the children, which he really enjoyed doing.”
Mr Robson, who is 98 years old and a resident at Lothian House, was 17 when he took part in D-Day.
Year 5 teacher, Liane Bowden said, “The assembly and was delighted to hear that one of the veterans had served in D-Day and was 98 years old.”
