Spennymoor Settlement is working with the volunteer curators at Spennymoor Town Hall’s Bob Abley Gallery, to mount an important exhibition in 2025.
However, they need help to recover two carved figures that were unable to be found after completion of the regeneration work to the Grade 2 Everyman Theatre in 2007. They may have been loaned out for display, or stored by someone for safe keeping.
The two figures are carved heads in black ebonised wood with a flat back resembling two book-ends and a broad smooth band, just behind the forehead. They are about 12 inches tall, quite heavy and very distinctive. They have been in the Settlement’s collection since being carved by Tisa Hess.
Secondly, the Settlement is keen to contact the family of a former miner, Jack Green, who was a pupil of Tisa Hess and learned the art of wood carving during her stay in Spennymoor, in the mid-1930’s.
