On Saturday 14th June, Bishop Auckland GC travelled to Newcastle (Westerhope GC) in the 5th Round of the Team Mail on Sunday Classic Competition. The day was fine with bright sunshine and little wind.
All five matches were initially tight affairs with very little given from either side, however the strength in depth of the Bishop Auckland Golf Team proved the key factor and all five ran out comfortable winners in the end.
The first to complete their match was Wayne Hewitt, who won after playing solid golf 6 & 5.
Paul King then won his match after being 4 down. He stuck to his task and finally won on the 18th after a great fight back.
Andrew Graham looked in control throughout his match and indeed went on to win 2 up.
Chris Thompson followed suit, winning his individual battle 2 up, but man-of-the-match was Jamie Birkbeck, ultimately winning 3 & 2, but on his way he carded 6 birdies and an eagle.
A further fantastic effort by all the players. The team will now play at home to Ryton GC at a date to be fixed.
