Bishop Auckland celebrates its young people

Winners received a glittering trophy to remember their contribution.

Bishop Auckland Town Council hosted its annual, inspiring and heart-warming Youth Awards Evening in June, celebrating the exceptional talents, contributions and achievements of young people from across the town.

Guests were welcomed in true red-carpet style by Mayor Sam Zair and Town Clerk Sarah Harris, who greeted award winners and their families as they arrived to celebrate a truly special evening.

The event was hosted by the dynamic and much-loved singer-songwriter, Channy Thompson, whose energy, passion, and positivity made for an unforgettable experience. Her heartfelt engagement with the audience and award recipients added a wonderful personal touch to the celebrations.

A total of 25 awards were presented on the evening — 19 individual awards and 6 group awards — recognising the diverse and inspiring efforts of young people in areas such as community service, sports, the arts, and personal achievement.

The awards would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the local community. The Town Council extends its sincere thanks to all the schools, youth groups, clubs, charities, and community organisations who submitted thoughtful and inspiring nominations.

A special thank you also goes to the many parents, carers, teachers, and mentors who took the time to nominate the amazing young people they work with and care for. Their support, encouragement, and belief in the next generation were key to making the evening such a success.

Mayor Sam Zair said: “Tonight we have had the honour of celebrating some of the brightest stars in our community. Their stories fill us with pride and hope for the future of Bishop Auckland. We are deeply grateful to everyone who played a part in making this evening possible.”

Town Clerk Sarah Harris added: “It’s been incredibly moving to see the sheer range of talent, kindness, and determination our young people show. The nominations we received were a testament to the wonderful work being done in our schools, youth groups, and families across the town.

“The Town Council also expresses its deepest gratitude to all the event sponsors who generously supported the evening and presented awards. Their ongoing commitment to investing in Bishop Auckland’s young people is both vital and valued.

“A big thank you is also extended to the volunteers, staff, and everyone working behind the scenes who helped bring the event together so smoothly and professionally.

“The evening was a true celebration of community spirit, and a shining reminder of the power and promise of our younger generation.”
