Having a free Saturday during the cricket season is unusual, to say the least, but the rest seemed to do the Shildon Railway side a favour, as they romped to victory in Sunday’s league game.
Asked to bat, after losing the toss, the Railwaymen scored 185 for 9 before declaring after 45 overs.
Several batsmen at last found a bit of form with skipper Greg Upton (42), Michael Lumley (24), Tom Newton (24) and Bret Upton (22) making the most valuable contributions.
In reply, visitors Murton were soon in trouble at 7 for 2, but the middle order rallied before the side was finally bowled out for 120.
Robert Nevison’s spin was again to the fore, taking 4 for 44 and Matthew Brown’s 3 for 27 helped get the job done.
Unfortunately, heavy rain at the coast meant that the second team’s game at Murton was cancelled, due to the ground being unfit.
Friday 18th July sees “the boys in pink,” Shildon Locos, at home to Mainsforth, in the second round of F15 games. On Saturday Seaham Park are the visitors to the Sportsfield for the second team game, whilst the first team make the trip to the coast.
On Sunday, a team will take part in the annual Craig Dargue Memorial Day at Mainsforth, when four sides play two semi finals and then a final, in the charity fund raising event.
