A depleted Ferryhill Athletic headed to South Hetton for their penultimate league game of the season against Hetton Juniors, the squad missing a number of players for the game, reports Chris Orton.
Despite this, Athletic battled really hard against the league champions whose quality it was clear to see.
The away side had a good portion of the play in the first half, with Matthew Agar going close with a shot before another terrific effort twenty minutes in put Ferryhill ahead.
Athletic had a good spell of attacking play, but Hetton always looked dangerous with their pace and they equalised just after the half hour with a strike that keeper Harvey Gunn was unable to stop.
Ferryhill remained determined with Joe Wilson commanding the game from midfield, and Jay Roddam playing very well at the back.
The second half was a trickier affair for Ferryhill with the players tiring and Hetton playing much better.
The home side took the lead with a sloppy goal and their experience shone through.
Athletic continued to threaten but were unable to make a breakthrough; the players all continuing to work hard and give their all against a very good opposition.
Both Kieron Richardson and Adam Morland came close to scoring on a couple of occasions late on, but to no avail.
In the end, an extremely busy month has taken its toll on the team, but the lads can all be proud of their effort.
Juniors ran out 2-1 victors and were presented with the league trophy after the game.
Ferryhill travel to bottom club, Billingham Town Reserves as the Chapter goes to press, on Wednesday 8th May, for their final league game of the season.
A better or similar result to fourth place Belmont will guarantee Athletic a highly creditable third place finish in their first season in Wearside League Division One. Kick-off is at 6.30pm.
Meanwhile, Athletic’s final game of the season will see them host the final of the Clem Smith Bowl at Dean Bank on 15th May, where they will face Durham City. Kick-off 6.45pm.
It is an opportunity for the club to win its first silverware since reforming and the club is hopeful of a good turnout for the game.
