Mark Anderson offered an apology to Moors supporters as he delivered an honest assessment following Tuesday night’s heavy defeat at Scunthorpe United.
Moors were thrashed 6-0 by The Iron at Glanford Park, conceding two goals in the opening eight minutes and finding themselves three behind and a man down by the break after Ben Pollock was sent off.
Midfielder Anderson, just back from an ankle injury, admitted that the standards dropped way below where they should be and insisted that the players will focus on putting that right at the earliest opportunity.
“It was obviously nowhere near good enough,” he told us.
“As players, we have to take that on the chin. We get all the preparation we could need coming into the games to allow us to perform and we didn’t do that. We were sloppy from the beginning.
“When you go down to ten men at a place like this, you’re 3-0 down and you’re chasing the game, I think the shape goes and good teams like Scunthorpe can pick you off.
“We’ve done that to other teams this season and we’ve had it done to us – that’s the league we’re in and we are still in a good position.
“We have to try and stay upbeat. As a Club and a group of players and staff, we never get too high when we win, and we can’t get too low when we lose.
“I think we’ve only lost two games in the league since the end of August, so now we’ve got a great game to try and bounce back in on Saturday.
“We’ll turn up to training and work hard on Thursday then be giving everything we can to right the wrongs when we get back on the pitch this weekend.
“We want to apologise to the fans; they came down in their numbers and they were all we could hear all game, so we thank them for that and we’re grateful for their backing.
“That support definitely doesn’t go unnoticed and hopefully we can repay them this Saturday.”
Moors will travel to Blackwell Meadows this weekend to face local rivals Darlington in what could be the perfect tonic after the surprise heavy defeat.
In better news, Moors Ladies booked their place in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup after producing a gutsy display to see off Wakefield at the Brewery Field on Sunday.
While it was the visitors who settled better, it was Moors who took the lead when Lily Jackson fired home an unstoppable shot from 20 yards midway through the first half.
The Ladies held on to their lead until the hour when the unfortunate Holly Middleton turned a low cross into her own net.
But Moors bounced back quickly and claimed the win when Caitlin Bates lashed home.
The Ladies now face a tough trip to Blackpool after Monday’s draw.
