Shildon couple June and Peter Wilson celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on Friday 27th February, having tied the knot at St John’s Church in 1965.
Peter was born in Beresford Street while June was born in Darlington – moving to Shildon when she was 13 years old.
The couple met at the Essoldo Picture House in Station Street where Peter, then 19, was a projectionist and June, 17, was an usherette.
After marriage they lived in Boddy Buildings and Coronation Avenue, before settling at their current address in Lime Grove in 1987.
They have one son, Steven, and a daughter, Hayley, as well as 6 grandchildren – 4 in England and 2 in Australia, where their daughter emigrated 25 years ago.
Peter was a keen course angler and has been secretary of Shildon Railway Bowls Club for the past 27 years, taking over from his dad who held the post for 25 years. June loves to pass the time in her garden and flower arranging, and also helps to run a local line dancing class. The couple both love to travel, especially visiting their family ‘down under’. They also share their love of country music and line dancing.
Peter and June celebrated their special day with family and friends with a party and Country & Western singer at Elm Road Club, where they raised a fantastic £631.60 for the Air Ambulance.
The popular couple also received over 100 cards congratulating them on their special day and welcomed a visit from the town mayor, Henry Nicholson, who presented them with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
