Chilton Town Council is currently working to ensure that the Miners’ Memorial, one of the town’s treasured heritage assets, is carefully and professionally repaired to protect it, and the memory of those from Chilton and Windlestone who gave their lives in the Great War, for generations to come.
The town council does not own the memorial but had agreed to cover the cleaning cost as part of the scheduled repair and cleaning contract for the Chilton War Memorial.
However, following a professional assessment, the memorial was deemed unsafe due to the displacement of one of the supporting marble slabs.
The town council has issued the following statement: “We are aware that this is taking some time as we work through the complex issues of ownership with a number of other organisations and gain the appropriate permission to carry out the repair.
“Please be assured that this is a priority for the town council and we recognise and share your views that it be made safe and open for public access without further delay.
“We will continue to provide updates as work progresses,” the statement added.
