Despite a damp start to the day, Shildon Alive’s Community Garden BBQ on Saturday 20th June went ahead as planned.
As the brave volunteers, complete with wellies and waterproofs arrived, the heavens opened.
Andrew Farlow lit the BBQ as the drops hissed and splatted, and the team prepared to share 80 burgers and sausages between just twelve.
Then the clouds parted and a watery sun peered down on the bedraggled group.
Over the next hour, 58 people arrived. Children planted out tomatoes and cucumbers whilst adults chatted, laughed, and won prizes on the tombola.
Rev’d David thanked everyone for their hard work as, with tomato sauce stains on their chins, the children tucked into a second sausage.
Paul Glazier commented, “This really feels like community”, while Rev’d David said, “It was a happy day. Funds were raised, friendships forged, food enjoyed, and as for the rain – it stayed well away for the rest of the day!”
