Sedgefield Water Polo Club’s U14 team had a home league match against Sheffield last month, where they aimed to replicate the success of their win in the away match earlier in the year.
The game got off to a very close start, with both teams taking it in turns to score – resulting in a 4-3 lead to Sedgefield at the end of the first quarter. The team worked very well defensively to ensure that Sheffield were unable to score any further goals up to half time, while the home side converted three more goals to take an impressive 7-3 lead.
After a team talk from head coach, Adam Woods, the side immediately got into a scoring rhythm with two more goals within a minute. The team’s fitness shone through with an end of quarter score of 13-4. The final quarter saw Sheffield’s determination shine through with four goals in quick succession, but this was not enough for their young team to win the game, with Sedgefield eventually claiming a 14-8 win.
Top marks went to Thomas, who scored a fantastic eight goals, getting his name on the scoresheet in all quarters of the game.
Team manager Sarah Gregory said: “It was great to have some valuable match play as well as gaining some league points in the process. The club would like to thank all parents, coaches and volunteers who helped ensure the match was able to take place, including those who helped fundraising efforts with our bake sale and pre-loved kit stall, raising much needed funds for the club.”
In addition to Junior and Senior sessions, Sedgefield Water Polo Club also offers a beginner session at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre on a Saturday afternoon for those wishing to try this fun and exciting sport.
