Ferryhill Station Royal British Legion would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the service held to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the unveiling of Mainsforth Colliery and Ferryhill Station War Memorial, on Saturday 29 March at Memorial Cottage, Ferryhill Station.
A special thank you to Ferryhill Station Royal British Legion Chairman Andy Denholm for organising the service, Reverend Christopher Humble from the Methodist Church for officiating at the service, Carol Atkinson Vice Chair of the Branch (Mayor of Ferryhill Town Council) for laying a wreath on behalf of the Branch, Andrew Potts for playing Last Post and Reveille, to the Royal British Legion standard Bearers who attended from across County Durham to mark the occasion, to Clare Metcalfe and Val Watson for their support in making the arrangements, to Peter Atkinson, Ferryhill Banner Group and the banner volunteers for arranging for the Mainsforth Colliery banner to attend the service and to the many residents who attended the ceremony.
The Memorial plaque was unveiled on Saturday 28 March 1925 by Lt Colonel Thomlinson, the same day as the opening of the corresponding cottage by Mrs Arthur Dorman. The memorial plaque was commissioned by Mainsforth Colliery and Ferryhill Station War Memorial Committee. It honours eighty six individuals who sacrificed their lives in the Great War.
Royal British Legion Chairman Andy Denholm who initiated proceedings at the Ceremony said: “It was an honour to take part in the 100th Anniversary service of Mainsforth Colliery and Ferryhill Station War Memorial.
“The Memorial is an important part of the Town’s history, which acknowledges the great sacrifice made by employees of Mainsforth Colliery and residents of Ferryhill Station. Their name liveth for ever more”.
