Councillor Shirley Quinn completed one of her final duties as retiring Mayoress earlier this month, where she had organised a two course meal and bingo night at the Civic Hall to thank a special group of people.
The room was set with large tables where many of Shildon’s volunteers gathered from familiar groups like Busy Bees, Shildon Alive, Jubilee Fields, Brownies and the football club.
The room was attended by many unsung heroes that have diligently given their time to help our township.
In her speech to the venue, Cllr Quinn praised the group of men, women and children sat before her.
“I think it’s really important to highlight the work of volunteers and the hard work you do,” she said, “because without your help in our community, many families, young people and elderly in Shildon would not be able to access the groups and projects that we offer in our town.
“That is why I wanted to organise this last event, as through my time as a councillor, I have seen the valuable work you are all involved in and wish to take this opportunity to speak on behalf of our Shildon residents to humbly thank you for all you do.”
She went on to thank Stuart and his staff at the Civic Hall for cooking and serving the delicious food.
The evening drew to a close after an hour of bingo and a raffle that raised £195 that will be divided with any outstanding funds left from her previous fundraising efforts to support our local charities.
