Two local running groups are hoping to gain more success at the Sports and Physical Activity Awards in County Durham on 14th September.
‘Run Bishop,’ a Durham County Council group, and ‘Hunwick Harriers’ are both supported by the Run England CPAL project.
The groups cater for all levels of ability and are particularly aimed at those new to the sport.
Sarah Beadle, County Durham Activator for Run England, hopes it will encourage people to take up running. She said, “Running is becoming more popular than ever, especially since the Olympics, and it’s a fantastic way of keeping fit. Our aim is to introduce running in a no pressure fun and safe environment, you do not need to have any previous experience as our groups are suitable for any age and ability.”
The group have fully qualified run leaders who offer help and encouragement. Many of their members have already gone on to do local races. Sarah said, “Running is a great alternative to centre based activities and one of the best sports for overall fitness. Our groups are a great way to meet new people and running with a group definitely helps to keep your motivation.”
All participants will receive free membership to Run England with offers and discounts at local shops.
The project is part of the Changing the Physical Activity Landscape (CPAL) programme, supported by NHS County Durham and Darlington and County Durham Sport, aiming to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in people aged 40-74 in County Durham through increased physical activity.
