Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides suffered a miserable weekend as they slumped to defeats in all three league games.
On Saturday, the 1st XI visited Marsden and were bowled out for 139, only skipper Greg Upton (40) and Phil Garbutt (30) batting with any conviction.
However, Shildon’s bowlers, led by Chris Young (4-31), soon had Marsden reeling at 40 for 4 but the home side fought back to win by three wickets.
At the Sportsfield, another excellent all round performance by youngster Lloyd Horner was the highlight of the match.
Opening the batting, Lloyd batted maturely, making 74, supported by Matthew Summerbell (40), from the total of 199 all out.
Marsden’s reply was well paced and they finally overcame Shildon’s total with only ten minutes to spare, making 201 for 5.
Juniors, Matthew Franklin 2-16 and Lloyd Horner 2-37, were the pick of the bowlers.
On Sunday, the 2nd XI made the long trip to Bill Quay and crashed to a seven wicket defeat, having been bowled out for a lowly 65.
Saturday sees the end of a difficult season for the Railwaymen, as the 1st XI go to Bill Quay.
Remedial work has commenced on the ground at the Sportsfield which will ensure that the playing surface will be up to standard for the start of the 2014 season, after an accidental application of over-strength weed killer caused serious damage.
