On Saturday 16 March, Spennymoor Town Band, under their Musical Director Fiona Casewell, qualified to represent the North of England at the National Brass Band Finals being held in Cheltenham in September.
The regional contest took place in the Gala Theatre, Durham where bands from Cumbria, North Yorkshire, Humberside, Northumberland and County Durham took part. The band will compete in the final against another 19 bands from across Great Britain.
Hugh Stephenson, President of the band told Spennymoor News: “We are delighted with the result which is the third time the band has qualified in the last seven years.
“It is great to put Spennymoor on the National map and we are very proud of the youth element of the band.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Spennymoor Town Council, county councillors, local businesses and the residents of Spennymoor for their continued support.”
Fiona Casewell added: “I’m delighted for our band to qualify for the National Finals. Nearly half of the band are aged under 21 which bodes well for future successes and we have a thriving youth band which will add to our ranks in time. It’s a hugely positive place to be!”
The Town and Youth bands will be holding their summer concert in the Town Hall on Saturday 8 June where the proceeds will go towards the £6,000 costs to get to finals.
