Tourism bosses make Laurel blunder

Tourism bosses have landed themselves in hot water after claiming that Stan Laurel was born in Bishop Auckland.

The ‘Visit County Durham’ brochure states, “Bet you didn’t know that Bishop Auckland was the birthplace of Arthur Stanley Jefferson, better known as Stan Laurel.’

Although Stan was christened in the town and attended King James Grammar School, he was in fact born in Ulverston in Cumbria.

Visit County Durham blames an ‘urban myth’ and has apologised for the error, but it claimed that it didn’t have enough money to recall the 50,000 leaflets!
