A hairdressing apprentice at Bishop Auckland College will represent the North-East at the national final of a prestigious industry competition after coming top of the crops in the regional heats.
Abbie Rogers, from Ferryhill, won the bridal hair section at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists North-East regional final held at the Federation Brewery in Dunston, competing against 15 other young hairdressers.
The 17-year-old, employed by ML Hair in Bishop Auckland, received a medal, hairdressing equipment and branded products, and will take on the best young hairdressers from across the country at the AHT National Finals in Blackpool on May 23.
Her model was Katie Hutchinson, 16, an apprentice with the college at Chapter One, which has salons in Esh Winning and Tow Law. Katie, from Crook, came second in the restyle cut category at the inter-college hairdressing competition held at New College Durham last month.
Other awards came for BAC students Gracie Thornton, 17, of Newton Aycliffe with her model Katie Hindmarch, also 17, from Evenwood and Lea McKimm, 21, from Bishop Auckland with her sister Kiera, 19 (a former BAC student), who all finished joint third in the evening style category at the AHT regional awards.
The latest awards follow a string of recent successes for Bishop Auckland College students.
Level 2 joinery apprentice Cameron Butterfield won the Construction & Joinery interskills competition at East Durham College last month, while Level 2 motor vehicle fitting student Daniel Bates was runner-up in the Motor Vehicle North-East category.
Meanwhile the Bishop Auckland College men’s football team was last week crowned winners of the North-East College’s League for the second time in six seasons.
Judith Layfield, Vice-Principal at Bishop Auckland College, said: “In the last couple of weeks our students have achieved some really impressive results in their respective vocational areas, and I would like to congratulate them all for their amazing achievements.”
