November has been a superb month for the local gymnasts from Athena Sports Academy, based at both Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre and Newton Aycliffe Sports Centre.
At the beginning of the month many of the gymnasts travelled north to a local competition held at the home of the Deerness Gymnastics’ Academy in Durham. This annual competition attracts gymnasts from all over the north east and has become very popular, making the competition for medals harder each year.
All of the gymnasts who competed had to be at their best, and the Athena Gymnasts certainly made their coaches very proud with a tally of 40 medals, including 12 Bronze, 8 silver and a remarkable 20 gold.
Some of the gymnasts didn’t have time to dwell on their fantastic performances, as they prepared for last weekend’s national show case, Gymfusion Northern, which was held in Newcastle.
GymFusion is British Gymnastics’ National Festivals Programme, and has seen over 4,500 performers take part in the non-competitive, show style festivals.
Eleven events take place across the UK and include exciting and creative performances from all ages, abilities and disciplines of gymnastics, guaranteed to wow the audience, with this year’s theme being ‘Next Generation’.
Athena Gymfusin 2014 team included a squad of 21 gymnasts, with the youngest aged 9 years, and dressed in futuristic costume.
The buzz from the audience was there for all to hear, as the squad performed what can only be described an amazing show of gymnastic talent.
The club are now preparing for their 3rd Annual Christmas showcase, which will be held at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre on Saturday 6th December with the performance starting at 2pm.
