Successive promotions for 2nds

Shildon Railway Cricket Club 2nds have achieved promotion to Division A of the Darlington & District Cricket League after defeating Cliffe at Hackworth Road on Saturday.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club signed off the 2024 season in style at Hackworth Road, when the 2nd team defeated Cliffe in the Darlington & District Cricket League Division B, thereby winning promotion to Division A, reports John Brennan.

Shildon won the toss and put Cliffe into bat. The visitors were all out for 98 in the 34th over, as Andrew Clegg (2 for 27), Shane Rowley (2 for 14), Rob Marquiss (2 for 22) and Chris Young (4 for 4) tore into the batsmen.

The Railwaymen’ s reply never seemed in doubt as Joe Knowles (47 not out) led from the start, and victory came in the 20th over, for the loss of three wickets.

The Railwaymen finish in second position to champions Barton, who were beaten by third placed Haughton. So for the second season running, the team has achieved promotion.

On Saturday evening, to help round off the season, a group of over 20 players enjoyed a fabulous meal at The Red Chilli Indian Restaurant in Church Street and enthusiastically celebrated the season and promotion.

The restaurant has been a major sponsor of the club this season and did the players proud!

The club wishes to thank all sponsors, supporters, the Town Crier and the people of Shildon who have continued to get behind the two senior teams and it looks forward to continuing this in the seasons ahead.

All players and friends of the club are invited to attend the Annual Presentation Night, which will be held at Shildon Railway Sports & Social Club (the BR) at 6pm on Saturday 12 October.

Awards will be presented to the top performing batsman and bowler in each team and the player of the year award will be voted for by team members for each side.

All players and members will vote for the Clubman of the Year Award.
