Storm Isha damages stand

The damaged roof of the old stand at Shildon AFC after Storm Isha.

As if defeat in Penrith on Saturday wasn’t enough for Shildon AFC, management and volunteers woke on Monday to the sight of significant damage caused by Storm Isha as a large section of roofing was blown off the iconic former main stand.

Trees blown over the boundary walls and into the ground were swiftly removed by the council, but the roof damage will take more time to repair.

A spokesperson for the club said: “It’s still early days but we have contacted our insurers and a structural engineer and we await their site visits and a detailed response.

“Early indications are that games can be still played if appropriate safety measures are put in place. This is of course subject to no further damage to the existing structure.

“We are just glad that there’s been no damage to neighbouring property or to people.

“Obviously, in the long term we will look to repair the roof.”
