Local amateur theatre group Spennymoor Stage and Song are celebrating for the second consecutive year after receiving accolades at the NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) North performance awards held on Saturday 5 October at the Grand Hotel in Gosforth Park, Newcastle.
At last year’s awards ceremony their production of The Addams Family was awarded the title of Best Musical in the District 4 area, and the group have followed that up this year by being awarded Best Pantomime for their January 2024 production of Cinderella and Best Ensemble in a Musical for Hello Dolly! staged at Spennymoor Town Hall back in April.
In addition to those, awards producer Liam Etherington carried off the individual award for Best Comedy in a Pantomime for his portrayal of Buttons in Cinderella.
Liam said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been awarded both Best Pantomime for our production of Cinderella and best ensemble for our musical Hello Dolly!
“Both shows were a massive team effort and it’s great to see everyone’s hard work and dedication recognised in this way”.
Spennymoor Stage and Song, formerly Spennymoor Amateur Operatic Society, have been in existence since 1912 and are proud to carry on that long tradition of providing affordable live entertainment to the local community and giving opportunities to young and old alike to tread the boards.
The group have recently staged a Saturday concert at Spennymoor Town Hall titled From the Wild West to the West End featuring songs and routines from shows such as Calamity Jane, Chicago and Les Miserables.
Hot on the heels from that the group are already well into rehearsals for their January 2025 Pantomime Aladdin which takes place between Wednesday 15 and Saturday 18 January 2025 at Spennymoor Town Hall with tickets priced at £9.
Heather Whitfield takes on the lead role of Aladdin, with Liam Etherington appearing as Wishee Washee and David Galloway as the dame, Widow Twankey.
Additional leading cast members include Jayne Etherington as Princess Mandarin, Ian Patterson as Abanazar, Robyn Watson as Genie of the Lamp and Ann-Marie Clayton as Spirit of the Ring.
Stage and Song are also delighted to announce that they will be performing Sister Act The Musical at the Town Hall from the 14 to 17 May 2025.
Tickets are already on sale now for both Aladdin and Sister Act and with recent shows having been near sell-outs, people are recommended to get their tickets early.
