Spennymoor War Memorial exhibition, curated by Spennymoor Town Council, centres on the centenary of the town’s Cheapside War Memorial and features evocative and emotional exhibits that commemorate and celebrate its service personnel.
A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “Spennymoor Town Council has long taken pride in honouring and remembering those who served the country and expressing their eternal gratitude to the souls who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The exhibition features photographs and stories, posters and letters with much of the information on show being kindly donated by residents.
Town Mayor, Cllr Dean Ranyard, said: “The people of Spennymoor always turn out in numbers to remember the fallen and pay tribute to serving forces personnel as Remembrance Day services and Armed Forces Day demonstrate.
“It is a source of immense pride that the town has such a rich history of people entering the armed forces and serving with honour and distinction.
“As such, it is our honour to host this exhibition that marks the centenary of the Spennymoor War Memorial – a much-loved monument that helps us remember those who died serving King, Queen and country.”
Free to all, the event is taking place in the Town Hall Memorial Room, running from Sunday 16 October to Saturday 22 October, between 10am until 3pm.
The Mayor will officially opened the event, accompanied by Father John Livesley, at 2pm on Sunday 16 October.
Visitors can also view works currently on display in the Bob Abley Art Gallery.
