On Saturday, 14th September, 2024, some members of the Spennymoor Veterans Breakfast Club went on an organised trip to The Last Post Memorial Bar and Museum in Thornaby.
The day started off with the veterans meeting up in Wetherspoons’ “The Grand Electric Hall” where they hold their breakfast club, before setting off on their trip.
When the veterans arrived at the venue, they were taken on a tour of the museum, which was full of artifacts from the First World War to modern day conflicts and represented all three branches of the armed forces.
The trip had been organised by Spennymoor Veterans Breakfast Club member Stephen Berry, who said: “We have been talking about visiting the Last Post Memorial Bar for some time after hearing from other veterans how good it was and we weren’t disappointed when we got there.”
The veterans noticed a book of remembrance in a glass vase near the end of the bar, and on the page it was open on was a tribute to Spennymoor’s Private Dean Hutchinson, who died in 2011, whilst serving in Afghanistan.
Breakfast club member Pete Molloy donated some copies of his book ‘Scaley – A true account of a Signalman in the British Army’ to help raise funds for the venue.
