Spenny Striders storm NYMAC Relays with five teams in impressive second outing

Spenny Striders are currently beginning the process of affiliation with England Athletics.

A fast-growing local running group made a strong impression this week as the Spenny Striders took on the NYMAC Relays at Stewart Park, fielding five teams and 20 runners in just their second organised event together.

Fresh from their debut at last month’s Neptune Relays, the Spennymoor-based group continues to build momentum, bringing together runners of all abilities for twice-weekly sessions and a shared focus on friendly, inclusive running.

The NYMAC Relays — a popular 4 × 1 mile team event — provided a lively and competitive backdrop, with the Striders once again demonstrating both enthusiasm and togetherness across all five mixed-ability teams.

Five teams, twenty runners, one strong team spirit

Spenny Striders were represented by:

Team 1: Tommy Durbridge, Amy Mold, John Richards, Ian Payne
Team 2: Chris Stockill, Kate McAngus, John Conway, Sarah Conway
Team 3: Dan Curry, Antony Edwards, Nicole Bewley, Nicky Aitchison
Team 4: David Edwards, Geoff Willis, Sara Lucas, Craig McAngus
Team 5: Amy Etherington, Vicki Munro, Gabrielle Suffield, Paul Lewis

Each team blended experience and ability, reflecting the group’s core ethos of participation, encouragement, and making running accessible to everyone.

“Thoroughly enjoyed by all” as team spirit shines through

Despite being a newly formed group, the Striders showed strong cohesion throughout the evening, with runners supporting one another across every leg of the relay and celebrating performances across all teams.

The event was described by participants as thoroughly enjoyed by all, with the relaxed but competitive atmosphere of the relays proving a perfect fit for the group’s inclusive approach.

Early momentum continues to build

While still in the early stages of development, the Spenny Striders are currently beginning the process of affiliation with England Athletics. The group continues to grow steadily, attracting regular attendance at their twice-weekly sessions in Spennymoor.

Their early appearances at local events, including the Neptune Relays and now the NYMAC Relays, highlight a clear enthusiasm for community participation and introducing runners of all levels to organised racing.

Open to all abilities

The Spenny Striders welcome runners of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced runners. Sessions are friendly, supportive, and focused on enjoyment, fitness, and community.
