Rosa Jones and Sophia Ottewell, two dedicated sixth form students from St John’s Catholic School and Sixth form College, are bringing a touch of Spanish flair to Shildon this November as part of their mission to raise funds for an educational trip to Spain in February 2026.
The pair, who are the only pupils studying A-Level Spanish at their college, hope to travel to Spain to gather research for their Individual Research Projects, improve their language skills, and immerse themselves in Spanish culture. They’re also passionate about encouraging others to discover the beauty of the Spanish language and culture, which they feel is often overlooked.
To help them reach their goal, they are hosting a fundraising event at Jubilee Fields Community Centre on Sunday 30 November, from 16:30 to 18:30. Children can enjoy Spanish-themed arts and crafts, while adults take part in a fun game of bingo. There will also be refreshments, a bake sale, a raffle, and a “Name the Gecko” competition.
Wristbands are £5.00 and can be purchased from the community centre; under-16s go free. The event will finish with a vibrant fashion show in the colours of the Spanish flag, staged by friends of the students.
All proceeds will go towards helping the students achieve their educational goals and celebrate the beauty of Spanish culture.
