The Children’s Play Area at Dean Bank Park, together with the piece of land where the bowls pavilion once stood, is all set to receive a major transformation, Ferryhill Town Council has announced.
Thanks to external funding being secured through Tarmac’s Landfill Communities Fund via the Derbyshire Environmental Trust (DET), the project, which in total is expected to cost in the region of £115,000, will see existing junior play equipment being replaced with new, modern and much more inclusive and vibrant equipment. In addition equipment suitable for teenagers will be installed on the area of land where the former bowls pavilion was demolished.
Following a series of community consultation and a formal procurement process, play company, Kompan, who submitted the most popular play designs with residents, were awarded the contract to deliver the project. Works are due to commence on site early in the New Year and will be ready for children to enjoy in the spring.
The equipment will include a toddler multi-play area, a junior play and junior multi-play area and a teenage area with Uno Climber, Sky Carousel and BLOQX 2 Climber.
The design also ensures that users of a range of abilities can interact, learn, imagine and play together. Inclusive and educational play panels will include Braille alphabet and numbers, the British Sign Language alphabet and non-verbal picture communication.
The area will be suitable for children and teenagers from one to 15 years old, have a capacity of over 110 users and include over 70 play features, including four different types of swing seats and seven different types of roundabouts. There will also be a picnic area with table, two additional seats and a litter bin.
Mayor, Councillor Angus Ferguson said: “Ferryhill Town Council is thrilled that it has been able to secure the monies required to regenerate the play facilities at Dean Bank Park.
“The Council is extremely grateful to Tarmac Ltd for contributing £90,000 grant funding, which will enable this project to be brought to fruition and breathe new life into the former Miners’ Welfare Park.”
