Campaigners in St Helen Auckland are celebrating after a decision to close the village surgery was reversed, securing the future of the much-valued facility.
Auckland Medical Group decided to keep the St Helen Medical Practice after months of campaigning by Save Our Surgery (SOS), a campaign founded by former West Auckland Labour councillors Rob Yorke and George Smith, who passed away last year.
SOS mobilised residents across the community to defend the local healthcare provision, with thousands of residents backing the campaign and more than 2,500 signing a petition calling for the practice to remain open. The issue prompted public meetings, protests at the surgery and widespread concern among patients who feared losing access to vital healthcare services.
Auckland Medical Group had proposed closing the surgery, citing concerns that the building was not fit for purpose and suggesting patients could instead attend facilities in Toft Hill and Bishop Auckland.
However, the group has now confirmed the surgery will remain open – a decision welcomed by campaigners and residents.
Rob Yorke, who helped establish the Save Our Surgery campaign, said: “This decision shows what can be achieved when a community stands together. It is fantastic for St Helen Auckland and a relief for over 5,000 patients who rely on the surgery. From day one, locals made it clear how important this facility is.
“SOS brought people together from across the village and beyond and shows the power of a united community. Thank you to all who promoted and signed the petition, attended meetings, shared concerns and supported the campaign.”
Mr Yorke also paid tribute to fellow campaigner and friend, George Smith, who sadly passed away last year: “This victory is also a tribute to George Smith, who worked tirelessly for this community. George was passionate about protecting services and ensuring resident voices were heard. He would have been delighted to see the surgery saved.”
West Auckland Parish Council also welcomed the news. Chair Kelly Guest said: “This is great news for residents and the surrounding areas. The surgery is vital to supporting people’s health and wellbeing – its importance cannot be overstated.
“The SOS campaign demonstrated just how strongly people feel about protecting essential local services. I would like to thank everyone involved in the campaign, and recognise the role played by George Smith, whose efforts helped secure this outcome.”
With the decision now reversed, campaigners hope focus can shift toward ensuring long-term viability of the surgery and maintaining healthcare for locals.
Mr Yorke added: “This campaign was never about confrontation – it was about protecting a service that people depend on. We look forward to working constructively with Auckland Medical Group to ensure the surgery continues to serve the community for years to come.”
