Next month you may well enjoy opening up an Advent Calendar in the lead up to Christmas.
But in Bishop Auckland, on December 1st, a very different giant Advent Calendar will begin to open up in shop windows around the town.
The first window, at the Town Hall, will be opened by Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Cllr Adam Zair during the Christmas Lights switch on event.
Throughout December, 23 more windows will open, each displaying a different Christmas carol or song.
Every window display will be created in partnership with a school or other local organisation.
By Christmas Eve, the whole giant calendar will be revealed and the window displays will remain on view over the holiday period until January 6th.
A leaflet with a map will be available so that visitors from far and wide can follow the Advent window trail around the town and be amazed at the creativity on display.
Advent Windows has taken place in other parts of the country, but this year’s display in Bishop Auckland will be a first for the north east.
The project is being organised by Bishop Auckland Town Team, assisted by Pam and David Pott, who initiated the Advent Windows idea in Stone in Staffordshire, a celebration which is now in its ninth year.
