Shildon AFC’s last eight matches have resulted in six draws and two losses as the club’s season heads towards it close.
The latest draw came on Monday night against Team Northumbria, with both sides sharing a point and a goal apiece – just as they did three weeks ago in the reverse fixture at Dean Street.
On a bitterly cold evening, Team North took the lead through Watling, who beat the onrushing Shildon keeper, Jake Johnson to the ball and lobbed it over him from the edge of the box.
Shildon got back into the match with a powerful John Brackstone header from a corner in the 38th minute.
In the second half, Shildon created numerous chances, but failed to score, coming closest when a Jamie Owens shot cannoned off the post.
The match was preceded by another draw last Friday, when the Railwaymen travelled to Marske and returned with a share of the points after a thrilling second half in which both sides, and two players, scored twice in a 2-2 draw. Sam Garvie grabbed Shildon’s two after goalkeeping errors and John Alexander scored both for Marske after beating the offside trap twice.
As we go to press, Shildon’s final game of the season will be taking place at Sunderland RCA, who were relegated on Monday night when Newcastle Benfield got the result they needed against Consett to remain in the division. A win could see the Railwaymen finish in eighth place in the league.
Update: Shildon finished the season on a high, winning their final match against Sunderland RCA by 3-0. With other results going their way, Shildon climbed up two places to finish the season in a creditable 8th position in the division.
